Für Katja Ruge – Fotografin, DJ und Musikproduzentin – sind Fotografie, Musik, Porträt und Popkultur untrennbar miteinander verbunden.
Ihre eindringlichen Porträts vermitteln das Gefühl, das Wesen der Abgebildeten zu erfassen und zugleich verborgene Facetten ihres Charakters zu entdecken. Diese Kunst beruht auf solidem Handwerk: Katja Ruge erlernte ihr Metier an einer Grafikschule und als Fotolaborantin von Grund auf, arbeitete als Fotoassistentin, Musikpromoterin und Artdirektorin, bevor sie sich vollständig der Fotografie widmete.
Wer mit Katja Ruge arbeitet, erlebt eine einfühlsame und zugleich höchst professionelle Künstlerin. „Ich verbinde und verbünde mich sofort mit meinem Gegenüber.“ Als Fotografin agiert sie auf Augenhöhe, erkennt intuitiv, ob ihr Gegenüber einen Energiekick oder sanfte Führung braucht. Mit klaren Ansagen, warmer Motivation und feinem Gespür für Bildkomposition hat sie Hunderte von Porträts geschaffen. In ihrem faszinierenden Universum verschmelzen Pop- und Subkultur.
Ihre gebündelte Expertise in Fotografie und Musik gibt Katja Ruge heute als Panelistin, Dozentin und Beraterin weiter. Besonders jungen Musiker*innen ist es ihr ein Anliegen, eine starke, mutige Bildsprache zu entwickeln. Ihre Kunst ist am Puls der Zeit – ohne bloß Trends zu folgen.
Ein besonderes Herzensprojekt ist Electric Lights – eine einzigartige audiovisuelle Erfahrung, bei der Musik, Licht und Fotografie zu einem Gesamtkunstwerk verschmelzen. Hier bringt Katja Ruge ihre kreativen Welten zusammen und erschafft immersive Erlebnisse, die den Charakter der elektronischen Musik visuell einfangen.
Auch als DJ lebt sie ihre Leidenschaft für Musik. Ihre intensiven Sets füllen Clubs und Events, geprägt vom Sound von New Wave und der 80er, aber stets mit einem Gespür für aktuelle Tracks.
Zusammen mit Frank Husemann bildet sie das Duo „Can Love Be Synth“. Analog produziert im Hamburger Synthesizerstudio, veröffentlicht das Projekt Remixe und eigene Tracks auf Labels wie Bordello A Parigi, Mute Records, Ombra Int. und TAU.

For Katja Ruge – photographer, DJ, and music producer – photography, music, portraiture, and pop culture are inseparably connected.
Her striking portraits give the viewer a sense of truly seeing the essence of the person portrayed while simultaneously revealing hidden facets of their character. This artistry is built on solid craftsmanship: Katja Ruge learned her trade at a graphic design school and as a photo lab technician, worked as a photo assistant, music promoter, and art director before fully dedicating herself to photography as a freelancer.
Working with Katja Ruge means encountering someone who is both deeply empathetic and highly professional. “I immediately connect and ally myself with the person in front of me.” As a photographer, she is a collaborator on equal footing, intuitively sensing whether her subject needs an energy boost or gentle guidance. With clear direction, warm encouragement, keen observational skills, and an instinctive feel for composition, she has created thousends of portraits.
In her fascinating universe, the boundaries between pop and subculture blur. Katja Ruge shares her deep expertise in photography and music as a panelist, lecturer, and consultant. She is especially passionate about helping young musicians develop a strong and fearless visual identity.
Her art is always in sync with the times—without simply chasing trends. A particularly heartfelt project is Electric Lights – a unique audiovisual experience where music, light, and photography merge into a total work of art. Here, Katja Ruge unites her creative worlds, crafting immersive experiences that visually capture the essence of electronic music. Electric Lights stands for hypnotic aesthetics, pulsating sounds, and an electrifying fusion of visuals and music.
Katja Ruge’s passion for music also finds expression in her DJ sets, which fill clubs and events with an intense energy. Her sound is strongly influenced by New wave and the ’80s, always with an eye on contemporary tracks.
Together with Frank Husemann, she forms the duo Can Love Be Synth, producing entirely analog in their Hamburg-based synthesizer studio. Their remixes and original releases have appeared on labels such as Bordello A Parigi, Mute Records, Ombra Int., and TAU.
